The chapter provides a comprehensive review of the current scientific evidence on the role of omega-3 fatty acids in brain health. It discusses the mechanisms by which omega-3 fatty acids are transported to the brain, the molecular pathways involved in the regulation of synaptic plasticity, and their roles in brain development throughout the life course. In addition, the potential effects of omega-3 fatty acids in neurological, psychiatric, and neurodevelopmental disorders—including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, depression, schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorder, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)—are critically evaluated based on recent scientific findings. The chapter also addresses current clinical perspectives regarding omega-3 supplementation, including dosage, duration of use, and the optimal EPA:DHA ratio, highlighting the importance of nutrition-based strategies in maintaining synaptic plasticity and supporting brain health.
At a time when nutrition-related misinformation is widespread, scientifically grounded resources that provide evidence-based recommendations for adequate and balanced nutrition are of great importance. This publication aims to contribute to the growing body of literature by presenting current knowledge on the relationship between omega-3 fatty acids and brain function in a comprehensive and evidence-based manner.
