With the contributions of the Nutrition and Dietetics (TR and ING) and Nursing (TR) departments, activities were organized for two days within the scope of 14 November World Diabetes Day. On the first day of the event, on Monday, November 14, 2022, the materials prepared by the department students to increase diabetes awareness were exhibited at the stand on the 0th Floor of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Block B. On Tuesday, November 15, 2022, the “World Diabetes Week Awareness Event” was held at Mehmet Akif Ersoy Hall with the participation of Prof. Dr. H. Şeyda ÖZCAN and Specialist Dietitian Neslihan Koyunoğlu BINGÖL.
On the first day of the event, banners, messages, and hand banners prepared by the Nutrition and Dietetics (TR and ING) and Nursing (TR) department students gave information about diabetes to the visitors of the stand. With the food replicas prepared by the students of the Nutrition and Dietetics (TR and ING) department, a portion of each food that an individual with diabetes should consume was displayed. Waist measurement and body mass index calculations were also done by the students during the whole day.
On the second day of the event, the “World Diabetes Week Awareness Event” was held between 09:30 and 12:00 with the participation of students from all departments. The program started with a moment of silence followed by the singing of the National Anthem. Then, Assist.Prof.Dr. A. Yüksel BARUT made a speech stating the meaning and importance of the day. In the first session of the event, Specialist Dietitian Neslihan Koyunoğlu BİNGÖL, who has been a diabetes dietician for many years mentioned the importance of medical nutrition therapy in diabetes.
In the second session of the event, Diabetes Nurse Prof. Dr. H. Şeyda ÖZCAN, who has many studies not only in the country but also abroad, in her speech; “It is an important chronic health problem that affects millions of people around the world and is increasing faster than expected. Diabetes is a complex condition and individuals with diabetes need ongoing interdisciplinary support. Especially in the COVID pandemic, individuals with diabetes could not reach the care they need. This has increased the risk of diabetes complications.”
Prof. Dr. H. Şeyda ÖZCAN, expressed diabetes as an epidemic, shared the changes in body image from past to present, diabetes diagnosis and treatment methods, diagnostic and treatment devices that are still being developed and are planned to be used in the following years, and underlined my duties to raise awareness of diabetes.
The event ended with the presentation of a plaque to Prof. Dr. H. Şeyda ÖZCAN and Specialist Dietitian Neslihan Koyunoğlu BINGÖL.
