Diabetes and Management: Raising Awareness for a Healthy Future!

Hande Nur Onur Öztürk, Assistant Professor at the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Health Sciences, Istanbul Gelişim University, shared important insights about diabetes, its symptoms, and prevention.

The increasing prevalence of diabetes highlights the importance of awareness and consciousness for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder caused by the insufficiency or ineffectiveness of insulin, the hormone responsible for regulating blood sugar. If not managed properly, diabetes can lead to serious health complications.
Types and Symptoms of Diabetes
Diabetes is primarily categorized into two types:
  • Type 1 Diabetes: This autoimmune disease, often diagnosed in childhood, occurs when the immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: Commonly seen in adults, this type is usually linked to obesity. It occurs when the body cannot effectively use insulin or does not produce enough of it.
Asst. Prof. Öztürk emphasized that symptoms of diabetes include excessive thirst, frequent urination, excessive hunger, fatigue, and blurred vision. She urged individuals experiencing these symptoms to consult a healthcare professional without delay.
Prevention and Management of Diabetes
While no proven method exists to prevent Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes can be largely prevented through lifestyle changes. Asst. Prof. Öztürk highlighted that healthy weight management, regular physical activity, and balanced nutrition play a significant role in reducing the risk of diabetes.
Recommendations for preventing and managing diabetes include:
  • Consume fiber-rich foods and healthy fats, while avoiding simple carbohydrates.
  • Engage in at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week.
  • Regularly monitor your blood sugar levels through medical check-ups.
“Raising awareness about diabetes and taking preventive measures is crucial,” stated Asst. Prof. Öztürk, encouraging individuals to adopt healthy habits and prioritize regular medical check-ups to significantly reduce the risk of diabetes.
Small Steps Towards a Healthy Future
Diabetes is a manageable condition with proper knowledge and awareness. Taking steps today can help prevent diabetes and keep it under control.
For questions about diabetes and personalized recommendations, do not hesitate to consult a healthcare professional.
