Istanbul Gelisim University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics Lecturer Münevver Gaye Aybey provided information about World Mint Chocolate Day, its history, and its health benefits.


Celebrated annually on February 19, National Chocolate Mint Day is a special occasion that honors the perfect harmony of rich chocolate and refreshing mint. This unique combination is not only loved for its delightful taste but also for its health benefits, making it a favorite among dessert lovers.

Chocolate and Mint: History and Health Benefits

1. Chocolate: A Treat That Brings Happiness

Chocolate has been consumed for centuries across different cultures and has long been recognized as a food that brings happiness. Originally introduced to Europe by the Aztecs and Mayans, chocolate was initially known for its bitter and intense flavor. However, over time, it was sweetened and evolved into the popular form we enjoy today.

Dark chocolate is known to be a rich source of antioxidants, particularly flavonoids, which support heart health. Additionally, it is associated with promoting the production of serotonin and dopamine, which can enhance mood and overall well-being.

2. Mint: Refreshment and Digestive Support

Used medicinally by the Ancient Greeks and Romans, mint has long been recognized for its positive effects on the digestive system. It is widely known to relieve indigestion and provide fresh breath with its cooling aroma. When combined with chocolate, it offers a satisfying experience that pleases both the taste buds and the body.

  • In 1953, Girl Scouts introduced Thin Mint Cookies, which remain one of the best-selling cookies today, further popularizing the mint chocolate flavor.
  • In 1973, in Devon, England, a culinary student named Marilyn Ricketts invented mint chocolate chip ice cream, which quickly became a worldwide sensation.
