Boost Your Happiness with Nutrition: Special Tips for International Day of Happiness

Istanbul Gelisim University Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Res. Asst. Dr. Başak Can made important statements about the connection between nutrition and happiness.

Celebrated every year on March 20, the International Day of Happiness highlights the significance of well-being and the impact of happiness on quality of life. Happiness is not only about emotions but also closely linked to physical health. Did you know that what you eat can influence your mood? By making conscious nutritional choices, you can maintain a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Nutrition and Happiness: Fuel Your Brain the Right Way

The foods we consume directly affect brain chemistry, determining the levels of happiness hormones such as serotonin and dopamine. Choosing the right nutrients can support both mental and emotional well-being. Here are some food groups that can positively impact your happiness:

  • Foods Rich in Tryptophan: This amino acid plays a key role in serotonin production, helping to stabilize mood. Turkey, eggs, dairy products, nuts, and bananas contribute to increased serotonin levels.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Known for improving brain function and reducing the risk of depression, omega-3 fatty acids can be found in salmon, walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds.
  • Sources of B Vitamins: Vitamins B6 and B12 support the nervous system, boost energy levels, and enhance mood. Whole grains, leafy green vegetables, legumes, and eggs are excellent sources of these essential vitamins.
  • Probiotics: Gut health has a significant impact on emotional well-being. Consuming probiotic-rich foods such as yogurt, kefir, pickles, and kombucha can support the gut-brain connection and help reduce stress.
  • Dark Chocolate: High-cocoa-content dark chocolate contains phenylethylamine, which enhances feelings of happiness and reduces stress levels.

Eat Well, Stay Happy!

Don't rely solely on external factors to boost your happiness—make mindful nutrition choices to feel more energetic and balanced. On March 20, International Day of Happiness, remember to prioritize foods that positively influence your mood and overall well-being!
