What is Audiology, Who is an Audiologist?
By definition, audiology refers to the science of hearing. It is a discipline that deals with the diagnosis and rehabilitation of hearing and balance disorders and the prevention of these diagnosed disorders. The Department of Audiology, on the other hand, is a new and open-to-development department that educates individuals who are competent in early diagnosis of hearing and balance losses and the appropriate treatment with a rehabilitative approach, has wide employment opportunities, where current scientific studies can be carried out, and where current developments in the field can be applied to patients in practice. Audiologist, graduate of faculties or colleges that provide undergraduate education in the field of Audiology; carries out studies to prevent hearing disorders through hearing and balance checks in individuals, and detects and rehabilitates hearing and balance disorders depending on the diagnosis and treatment guidance of the relevant specialist physician and determines the devices used for these purposes; is a healthcare professional. Istanbul Gelişim University Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Audiology was opened in 2013. Our department aims to enable undergraduate program students to provide the best service to the public by offering high standards of knowledge, clinical services and research conditions.

What are the Course Contents of the Department of Audiology?
In the Department of Audiology, our students are given systematic vocational training to provide them with professional knowledge and skills. The Department of Audiology, which has been continuing education since 2013 within the Faculty of Health Sciences of our university, has basic and professional introductory courses in its first year. In addition to the common courses given within Health Sciences such as Anatomy, Physiology, Neuroanatomy and Neurophysiology, as well as basic courses such as Physics of Sound and Acoustics and Psychology, an introduction to the field of Audiology is made with the Basic Audiology course. Here, it is aimed to create a professional foundation for our students. In the 2nd and 3rd years, training is given on audiological and vestibular tests, diagnosis, rehabilitation and treatment of diseases. We have courses such as Test Methods in Hearing Measurement, Ear Nose and Throat Diseases, Hearing Screening Programs, Introduction to Hearing Aids, Rehabilitative Audiology, Pediatric Audiology, Vestibular Rehabilitation. Our students have the opportunity to do internships during the summer term of their 2nd year. In the 4th year of undergraduate education, our students are given clinical practice training, where they have the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have learned for three years, and are offered the opportunity to do 3 full days of professional practice in public hospitals, private hospitals and centers, hearing aid centers and rehabilitation centers.

What Does an Audiologist Do?
Studies to protect hearing health and prevent hearing loss, evaluation and rehabilitation of hearing and balance disorders, selection and programming of devices to be used in hearing rehabilitation, auditory perception evaluations and rehabilitation, taking part in hearing screening programs and applying tests, interpreting audiological test results and reporting the results, cochlear These can be listed as implant candidate evaluations and follow-up, cochlear implant adjustment and follow-up, noise measurements and providing information on protecting hearing health, and preparing hearing-related training programs.

What are the Career Opportunities for Audiologists?
Audiologists can work in public hospitals, private hospitals, private practices, ear nose and throat centers, hearing aid production and sales centers, cochlear implant companies, private education and rehabilitation centers, schools for the hearing impaired, universities and research centers, and industrial companies. Our graduates can work in different sectors by obtaining titles such as pediatric audiologist, educational audiologist, clinical and rehabilitation audiologist, industrial audiologist. Our department graduates can apply for master's and doctoral programs if they aim to pursue an academic career. In the fall semester of the 2019-2020 academic year at our university, first semester Audiology Master's students started their education.

What are the Laboratory Facilities in the Department of Audiology?
Istanbul Gelişim University, which attaches importance to practical education as well as theoretical education within the framework of its internationalization strategy, continues this vision for the Audiology Department of the Faculty of Health Sciences. In the laboratory of the Department of Audiology, undergraduate students practice on auditory and vestibular equipment. The Audiology Department laboratory is equipped with new and state-of-the-art equipment, including a dual-channel
clinical audiometer, immittance meter, otoacoustic emission, auditory evoked potentials, videonystagmography, hearing aid and real ear measurement equipment.

Are there a double major or ERASMUS+ opportunities in the Department of Audiology?
Our students with a GPA of 2.90 or above on a 4.00 scale and who fall within the top 20% of their undergraduate or associate degree program can start a second major program free of charge. Students who successfully complete the second major program graduate with two bachelor's degrees.
Our students can also benefit from study and internship mobility within the framework of the Erasmus+ program at universities we have agreements with.
