The first and only randomized controlled study in Turkey examining the effects of Kangaroo Care on infants undergoing cardiac surgery has been published in a high-impact international journal. Titled “The Effect of Kangaroo Care on Vital Signs in Infants Undergoing Cardiac Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Study,” the research fills a significant scientific gap in the field of pediatric cardiac intensive care nursing.
The study found that Kangaroo Care, applied during the postoperative intensive care period following major cardiac surgery, positively influenced vital signs such as heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and body temperature. The findings demonstrated that the method enhances hemodynamic stability not only in premature infants but also in infants recovering from cardiac surgery.
The results revealed that Kangaroo Care reduces stress responses and strengthens physiological well-being during the postoperative period. Experts highlight that these findings provide an important reference for incorporating family-centered care practices into intensive care settings.
As the first scientific evidence in Turkey on family-centered care within pediatric cardiac intensive care, the study stands out with its pioneering contribution. The data obtained are expected to guide updates to clinical guidelines and support the development of evidence-based care protocols.
With its strong methodology and unique clinical contribution, the study offers a significant addition to the international pediatric nursing literature. Its publication in a high-impact, Q1-ranked journal underscores the global relevance of the findings.
This study also marks a significant academic success for Istanbul Gelişim University. Conducted by Dilara CENGİZLİ, Research Assistant in the IGU Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing, and supervised by Dr. Selvinaz ALBAYRAK of Istinye University, the research was published in the Q1-ranked Journal of Pediatric Nursing, one of the leading journals in the field.
