Speech And Language Therapy

THE IMPORTANCE AND ROLE OF ASSESSMENT IN SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY

Lecturer Dkt. Hava ÇETİN from the Department of Speech and Language Therapy shared insights on the importance and role of assessment in speech and language therapy.

“Assessment is one of the most fundamental building blocks of the speech and language therapy process. It allows us to understand the scope and nature of the individual’s communication difficulties, as well as their unique needs. A correct beginning in therapy is only possible through accurate assessment.

Each individual differs in terms of age, developmental level, coexisting diagnoses, or environmental factors. Therefore, the assessment process is not limited to the application of tests alone, but rather is a comprehensive process of observation and analysis.”

Why Is Assessment Essential?

Çetin highlighted the importance of assessment, stating:
“Speech and language disorders cover a wide range: from articulation and phonological disorders to delayed language development, from fluency disorders to aphasia, from voice disorders to swallowing difficulties. Each of these areas requires different assessment methods, tools, and approaches.

Therefore, in order to define individualized therapy goals, the following questions must first be clarified:

  • What are the individual’s strengths and weaknesses?

  • In which areas (speech, comprehension, voice, fluency, etc.) does the disorder manifest itself?

  • What is its impact on daily life?

  • What are the observations of the family or educational environment?”

Not Just Tests: Observation, Play, and Interaction Are Also Assessment

“Especially in the assessment of children, in addition to structured tests, observing them in a natural play setting is extremely valuable. Some children may not display their true performance in a testing environment. Interactive play enables the child to demonstrate language use in a more natural and genuine way.

In adults, however, the individual’s communication needs, the challenges encountered in daily life, and the level of social participation must be taken into account. When necessary, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams should be established to ensure a more holistic assessment.”

Effective Therapy Is Not Possible Without Assessment

“For therapy to be individualized, effective, and goal-oriented, assessment results must form the foundation. An incorrect or incomplete assessment may lead to setting inappropriate goals, resulting in an ineffective therapy process.

Furthermore, assessment is not a one-time process. As therapy progresses, reassessments must be conducted, and goals should be updated in line with the individual’s development. This ensures that therapy remains dynamic, trackable, and purposeful.”

In Conclusion…

Lecturer Dkt. Hava Çetin concluded with the following:
“In speech and language therapy, assessment is not only the starting point of the process but also the foundation of the entire therapeutic approach. Understanding the individual’s needs, setting effective goals, and structuring the therapy process are only possible through a comprehensive and professional assessment.

As speech and language therapists, we adopt assessment that is based on scientific foundations, individualized, and conducted within the framework of ethical principles. Because accurate assessment means accurate support.”
