World Lung Cancer Day – November 17: The Vital Role of Awareness, Early Diagnosis and Rehabilitation

World Lung Cancer Day, observed on November 17, aims to raise public awareness about lung cancer, emphasize the importance of early diagnosis, and promote healthy lifestyle habits. In addition to medical treatments, physiotherapy and rehabilitation practices play a crucial role in improving respiratory function, enhancing quality of life, and supporting the overall treatment process in lung cancer care.

World Lung Cancer Day, commemorated each year on November 17, is an important public health initiative aimed at raising awareness about lung health, highlighting the significance of early diagnosis, and supporting treatment processes. Lung cancer remains one of the leading cancers worldwide in terms of both incidence and cancer-related deaths. For this reason, promoting awareness about prevention and widespread use of early detection methods carries vital importance.

While smoking stands out as the most significant risk factor in the development of lung cancer, passive smoke exposure, air pollution, occupational chemical exposure, and genetic predisposition also contribute to the onset of the disease. Since lung cancer often does not cause noticeable symptoms in its early stages, many individuals receive a diagnosis at an advanced stage. This once again underscores the importance of early detection. Regular check-ups, avoiding risk factors, and paying attention to respiratory health are critical steps in preventing and detecting lung cancer early.

Lung cancer treatment is planned according to the stage of the disease and the patient’s overall health status, using methods such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy. However, modern treatment approaches extend beyond medical interventions alone and require a holistic view of the patient. At this point, physiotherapy and rehabilitation practices emerge as complementary and supportive components of the treatment process.

The contributions of physiotherapy and rehabilitation in lung cancer treatment are multifaceted. The primary goals include maintaining and improving respiratory functions, increasing independence in daily activities, and reducing complications that may arise from treatment. Weakness in the respiratory muscles, fatigue, shortness of breath, coughing and reduced mobility can be significantly managed through physiotherapy practices.

Breathing exercises used during treatment help improve lung capacity and oxygenation. Deep breathing exercises, techniques that ensure proper use of the diaphragm, and controlled breathing methods assist patients in breathing more comfortably both during and after treatment. In the postoperative period, physiotherapy plays a key role in secretion control, supporting lung expansion and preventing potential complications. Regular respiratory therapies help prevent fluid accumulation in the lungs and reduce the risk of infection.

Lung cancer treatment is challenging not only physically but also psychologically. Fatigue, anxiety, reduced physical capacity and difficulty performing daily activities may lead to a loss of motivation. Rehabilitation programs aim to strengthen patients both physically and psychosocially. Exercise programs improve physical endurance while helping individuals continue their treatment process more confidently. Low-intensity aerobic exercises, muscle-strengthening activities and relaxation techniques are among the important components of this process.

Rehabilitation approaches applied at various stages of the disease significantly contribute to patients’ quality of life. Maintaining physical capacity, supporting independence and improving functionality in daily activities positively influence treatment adherence and overall well-being.

World Lung Cancer Day not only helps increase understanding of the disease but also provides an opportunity to promote healthy lifestyle behaviors within society. Avoiding tobacco products, spending time in clean air environments, engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy diet and not neglecting routine health check-ups are fundamental elements for protecting lung health.

On this special day, we emphasize the importance of raising awareness about lung cancer, reminding the public of the value of early diagnosis methods and promoting multidisciplinary approaches in treatment. By highlighting the strong support that physiotherapy and rehabilitation provide in protecting respiratory health and improving quality of life, we invite all individuals to adopt healthy lifestyle habits.
