Ministry of Health to Compile a List of Climate-Sensitive Diseases

According to a report by Anadolu Agency (AA), the Ministry of Health will compile a list of “climate-sensitive diseases” as part of its efforts to reduce the health impacts of climate change and manage related risks. Through the Climate Change and Health Action Plan it is preparing, the Ministry aims to identify priority risks, raise awareness among healthcare professionals, and promote preventive practices that protect public health.

Recent research has made it increasingly clear that climate change is not only an environmental issue but also one that deeply affects public health. Factors such as rising temperatures, air pollution, water scarcity, extreme weather events, and vector-borne diseases can increase the prevalence of respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and musculoskeletal disorders.

According to the Ministry’s statement, in order to systematically monitor the health effects of climate change, a “list of climate-sensitive diseases” will first be established to identify conditions influenced by these factors. By analyzing the data collected from healthcare facilities through this list, risk-prone regions will be identified, and early warning mechanisms will be implemented.

As part of the upcoming action plan, a “Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change and Health” will be established. This board will scientifically assess health threats related to climate change, develop strategic recommendations in collaboration with relevant institutions and organizations, and support the training of primary healthcare personnel on this topic to strengthen early diagnosis and monitoring of climate-sensitive diseases.

The Ministry also plans to organize educational programs to inform the public and raise awareness on topics such as healthy nutrition, physical activity, hygiene, and lifestyle. Vulnerable groups—including children, the elderly, individuals with chronic diseases, and outdoor workers—have been identified as priority target audiences.

According to AA’s report, these nationwide initiatives aim to strengthen the capacity of the healthcare sector in adapting to climate change. The overarching goal is to reduce health problems caused by environmental factors, protect public health, and prepare the healthcare system for the future.

Evaluation from the Perspective of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation

The effects of climate change on human health are not limited to infectious diseases. Heat waves, changes in humidity levels, deteriorating air quality, and environmental stress factors can also directly influence the progression of musculoskeletal disorders.

For example, hot and humid weather conditions can increase muscle cramps, joint pain, and circulatory problems, while cold weather can exacerbate symptoms of rheumatic diseases. Moreover, the growing sedentary lifestyle associated with climate change contributes to the spread of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disorders—thereby increasing the need for physiotherapy and rehabilitation services.

As the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation at Istanbul Gelisim University, we view these developments not only as a public health issue but also as an area of professional responsibility.
Physiotherapists play a crucial role in mitigating health risks associated with climate change. Through exercise programs, respiratory physiotherapy, ergonomic training, public awareness activities, and chronic disease management, physiotherapists can make active contributions.

Our academic staff conduct research aimed at building resilient communities against climate-related health challenges and train our students with this awareness. Additionally, through community seminars and educational initiatives, we seek to draw attention to the effects of environmental factors on the human movement system.

In the process of adapting to climate change and protecting public health, interdisciplinary collaboration is essential. The field of physiotherapy and rehabilitation makes a significant contribution to this multidisciplinary approach by helping individuals maintain mobility and improve their quality of life.
