International Success for Büşra Sayir and Her Students: Thesis Transformed into a Conference Paper

Büşra Sayir, Lecturer at Istanbul Gelisim University Vocational School of Health Services, presented an international conference paper based on research she conducted with her graduates examining the effects of screen exposure on children’s sensory development. The team, which transformed the thesis into a conference paper, once again demonstrated the power of research-based learning in education.

Lecturer Büşra Sayir, together with her graduate students Hakkı ALP, Esmanur ÜNAL, and Kübra KARAKUŞ, gained international academic recognition through this research. Their paper, developed from the students’ graduation thesis and titled “The Effects of Screen Exposure on Children’s Sensory Development: An Occupational Therapy Perspective,” was presented at the 8th International Istanbul Contemporary Scientific Research Congress, held in Istanbul from October 10–12, 2025.

The study sheds light on a significant contemporary health issue by examining the potential effects of digital screens on children’s sensory development. Under Sayir’s supervision, the students explored how increasing screen time at an early age affects children’s sensory and motor development.
Sayir emphasized that the research offered students not just a graduation project but also an opportunity to experience the scientific production process firsthand. As a physiotherapist working in the field of child development and health, Sayir noted that the results once again highlight the importance of research-based education.

"The active participation of our students in the research process and the scientific outcomes they achieved demonstrate the value of a research-based approach in education. Studies like this make significant contributions to both academic and professional development."

The research evaluated the relationship between children’s exposure to screens such as televisions, tablets, and phones, and their sensory integration, movement coordination, and environmental awareness skills. Findings suggested that intensive screen exposure at an early age may reduce physical activity levels and limit sensory experiences.

The results provided valuable insights for parents and educators to increase awareness about screen usage. Sayir and her team emphasized the importance of managing screen time in children’s developmental stages in a balanced manner.
This study is considered a concrete example of Istanbul Gelisim University Faculty of Health Sciences’ approach to supporting students’ participation in academic production. With their first international conference paper experience, the students made a significant step forward in both scientific and personal development.
