Physical functional limitations, chronic pain and fatigue, sensorimotor impairments, and social isolation with loss of roles represent core areas for occupational therapy intervention. Rather than addressing symptoms alone, occupational therapy emphasizes enabling individuals to reconnect with life through meaningful and productive activities.
Occupational therapists support individuals’ safe and sustainable participation in activities of daily living, promoting functional independence through activity adaptation and environmental modifications. Through community-based rehabilitation programs, they strengthen social inclusion and facilitate re-engagement in education, work, and community roles.
Stigma and social exclusion associated with NTDs profoundly affect psychosocial well-being. In this context, occupational therapy extends beyond physical rehabilitation to address self-efficacy, self-esteem, and social acceptance. By empowering individuals, occupational therapy helps shift them from a passive patient role to an active position within society.
In conclusion, occupational therapy represents a transformative approach in the response to Neglected Tropical Diseases—one that goes beyond rehabilitation to promote health equity and inclusivity. By centering on daily life, social participation, and human dignity, occupational therapy plays a vital role in addressing global health inequalities.
