1.What is occupational therapy and what does it do?
Occupational therapy is a health discipline that aims to increase individuals' independence in daily living activities. Occupational therapists help individuals with physical, mental, emotional, or social barriers. These aids target enhancing the functionality and quality of life of the individual in various environments such as home, work, and school.
2.In which fields can occupational therapists work?
Occupational therapists can work in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, schools, special education centers, nursing homes, home care services, and workplaces. Additionally, they can establish their private clinics and run their own businesses. Some occupational therapists also pursue an academic career and work as lecturers at universities.
3.What methods do occupational therapists use?
Occupational therapists use methods such as activity analysis, sensorimotor activities, developing hand skills, cognitive rehabilitation, the use of adaptive equipment, environmental adjustments, and relearning daily living activities. They also provide group therapy and individual counseling to develop the individual's social and emotional skills.
4.What courses are taught during occupational therapy education?
During occupational therapy education, courses such as anatomy, physiology, neurology, psychology, theories and models of occupational therapy, activity-based treatment, occupational therapy for children, adults, and the elderly, mental health occupational therapy, and methods of work and occupational therapy are taught. Additionally, students gain practical experience through clinical practices and internships.
5.What is the difference between occupational therapy and physical therapy?
Although both occupational therapy and physical therapy work in the field of rehabilitation, they have different goals. Physical therapy generally aims to improve physical functions and mobility, whereas occupational therapy focuses on enabling the person to perform daily living activities independently. Occupational therapy develops the necessary skills and makes environmental adjustments for the individual to carry out activities in work, school, home, and social life.
6.Are there Double Major and ERASMUS+ opportunities?
Students with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.90 out of 4.00 in their major program and who are in the top 20% of success in their respective class in the undergraduate or associate degree program can start a second major program free of charge. Students who successfully complete the Double Major program graduate with two undergraduate diplomas. Our students can benefit from study and internship mobility at universities we have agreements with through the Erasmus+ program.
