Recent meta-analyses and clinical studies indicate that art therapy has positive effects particularly in psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety. Visual arts and creative expression–based sessions have been shown to significantly reduce anxiety levels while enhancing social interaction, emotional regulation, and self-efficacy. Some studies also report improvements in depressive symptoms, stress, and sleep problems in adults with trauma histories.
Studies from Turkey highlight remarkable outcomes of combining art therapy with occupational therapy in older adults. Research reports increased cognitive functioning, reduced depressive symptoms, and improved quality of life in individuals aged 65 and older. These interventions are also noted to reduce caregiver burden and facilitate the caregiving process.
Despite the promising findings, limitations persist in art therapy research. Methodological diversity among studies, small sample sizes, and the lack of standardized therapy protocols remain significant challenges. More comprehensive research is needed to determine which art modalities are most effective, how frequently they should be used, and with which target groups.
Occupational therapy and art therapy together present a powerful combination that supports physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being, according to current scientific evidence. The parallel development of academic and clinical work in Turkey suggests that art-based occupational therapy interventions may become more widespread and standardized in the near future.
