Clothes for children with Down Syndrome will be produced!

Functionally designed clothes, which will largely eliminate the difficulties of dressing children with Down Syndrome, will be produced in the Fashion Design Program of Istanbul Gelisim University Vocational School.

Down Syndrome is one of the most common chromosomal conditions, with an average of one in every 800 births. Lect. Sultan Cetinkaya, from Istanbul Gelisim University Vocational School Fashion Design Program, continues to work on a scientific research project that aims to produce functionally designed clothes that largely eliminate the dressing difficulties of children with Down Syndrome. Cetinkaya stated that as a result of the study, they aimed to reach different styles of clothes that increase the ability of children to dress themselves, do not restrict their movements and catch the fashion trends, with the clothes designed and produced for these special children.

PILOT IMPLEMENTATION WAS MADE WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE PROJECT!

Lect. Sultan Çetinkaya stated that they carried out a pilot application by producing sample clothes for two girls and two boys with Down Syndrome.  Cetinkaya also underlined that in these produced clothes, accessories with functions that will enable children with Down Syndrome to easily pull off and wear the clothes on their own without the need for another individual are preferred. Warm colors, most preferred by children with Down Syndrome, were used in the color selection of the clothes. Sample clothets was presented to art lovers at the ‘’9th Media Awards Ceremony Art Exhibition’’ and the ‘’Harmony Exhibition.’’

CLOTHES WILL BE DESIGNED IN THE STYLES AND COLORS PREFERRED BY CHILDREN WITH DOWN SYNDROME

Lect. Cetinkaya said: ‘’Within the scope of the project, we will produce collections for 10 children with Down Syndrome between the ages of 12-18 at Gülseren Özdemir Special Education School. While producing the collection pieces, functions that solve the dressing problems learned by children by asking their parents will be developed, and clothes in the colors and styles preferred by these children will be designed and produced. When the project is completed, it is also among our plans to arrange a fashion show with children with Down Syndrome.”
