A Seminar titled “Technology Use and Digital Balance” was held

A seminar titled “Technology Use and Digital Balance” was held on 14 January 2026 for middle school students by Research Assistant Kevser Tuğba Çınar Karasu from the Department of Child Development, Faculty of Health Sciences, Istanbul Gelişim University. The event aimed to raise awareness by examining the relationship that children and adolescents have with the digital world within the framework of their developmental characteristics.

Within the scope of the seminar, topics such as middle school students’ technology use habits, the effects of digital tools on the brain and behavior, patterns of risky use, and the concept of digital balance were discussed. Throughout the program, it was emphasized that technology use should be evaluated from the perspective of control, balance, and self-regulation.

As the speaker of the seminar, Kevser Tuğba Çınar Karasu presented a detailed explanation of the effects of technology on children’s brain development and behavior, based on the developmental characteristics of middle school students. She stated that the reward and expectation system is particularly sensitive at this age and that digital games and online content can stimulate this system very quickly.

Karasu also emphasized that when technology is used correctly and purposefully, it can support learning, creativity, and problem-solving skills. However, she noted that uncontrolled use may lead to a shorter attention span, increased procrastination behaviors, and difficulties in emotional regulation. In addition, she stated that the interactive activities implemented during the seminar aimed to help students become aware of their own technology use habits.

Through the practical activities included in the program, the concept of digital balance was made more concrete, and the importance of balancing screen use with other areas of daily life was highlighted. The seminar concluded with the participants’ questions being answered and the sharing of recommendations to support students in acting more consciously, responsibly, and safely in the digital world.
