Early Diagnosis, Healthy Hearing: The Importance of Hearing Health in Children

Research Assistant Çağla TÜRK from Istanbul Gelisim University, Department of Audiology, emphasized the importance of hearing health in children.

Hearing is one of the most essential senses that enables children to explore the world around them. For a child to interact with their environment, learn language, distinguish sounds, and develop social relationships, a healthy auditory system is crucial. However, when hearing loss is not detected at an early stage, it can affect many aspects of development, from language acquisition to academic performance.

Mid-term breaks are valuable periods when families have the opportunity to observe their children more closely, away from the fast pace of daily life. During this time, noticing how a child communicates and identifying small but significant signs can be very important.

If a child often turns up the volume of the television, frequently says “what did you say?”, mispronounces words, or has difficulty concentrating, these may be indicators of a hearing problem.

Audiology plays a critical role in the early diagnosis and rehabilitation of hearing loss in children. Newborn hearing screenings are an essential first step; however, some types of hearing loss may develop after birth. Therefore, it is recommended that audiological evaluations be conducted regularly during preschool and school-age years.

With early diagnosis, hearing aids, cochlear implants, or auditory rehabilitation programs can effectively support children’s hearing and speech development. With proper intervention, children can communicate at the same level as their peers and avoid falling behind in learning processes.

One of the most important responsibilities during the mid-term break is for families to review not only their children’s academic performance but also their sensory development. A hearing loss that goes unnoticed in silence can turn into a communication barrier if not addressed early.

Hearing is not only the perception of sound — it is the way we understand life itself.
