 2021-2022 Spring Semester Audiology Seminars Have Started


Spring Semester Audiology Seminars for the 2021-2022 academic year began on March 22, 2022. Seminar presentations will continue through the end of the spring semester, in conjunction with the presentations of the Audiology Department Research Assistants.


This week's seminar presentations began with Res. Asst. Azize KÖSEOĞLU's talk on "Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD)." Res. Asst. Köseoğlu talked about Central Auditory Processin, Functions of the Central Hearing System, Historical Development, Etiology, and Prevalence of CAPD, Symptoms of CAPD, CAPD evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment approaches.
 
Köseoğlu emphasized that before assessing central auditory processing disorder in children, the child's age, peripheral hearing, language proficiency, cognitive capacity, phonology/pronunciation, neurological or other problems should be considered, and that a multidisciplinary approach, particularly by audiologists, is required in the diagnostic team.
 
Symptoms of central auditory processing disorder include difficulty comprehending speech, wanting to repeat what has been said frequently, being easily distracted, difficulty understanding in a noisy environment, difficulty distinguishing where the sound comes from, and difficulties reading, writing, and spelling. SID, which has symptoms similar to other neurodevelopmental diseases, can be confused with other diseases with similar symptoms, especially in childhood, making diagnosis difficult. 
 
There is no national or international standard diagnostic procedure, hence a detailed history, scales, behavioral tests, and electrophysiological tests are used. At the end of the talk, Köseolu answered questions from the audience.
Vice Dean of Health Sciences Faculty, Asst. Prof. Abdullah Yüksel BARUT, Audiology Department Head, Asst. Prof. Selva ZEREN, Audiology Department Lecturers, and Research Assistants were present. The seminar, which was productive, concluded with questions regarding the subject and their contributions at the end of the presentation.
