The academic book "Oncological Rehabilitation: Science, Movement and Quality of Life," prepared with editorial and chapter contributions from academics of the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation at Istanbul Gelisim University, Faculty of Health Sciences, was published by All Sciences Academy in September 2026.

Edited by our department's academics Asst. Prof. Hüsniye Merve Demirer, Lecturer Dr. Hande Besna Göçen, and Asst. Prof. Suzan Aydın, the book brings together different areas of oncological rehabilitation and explores scientific approaches to the rehabilitation of individuals diagnosed with cancer. Res. Asst. İremnur Günhan, also a member of our department, contributed to the book as a chapter author.

Focusing on the role of rehabilitation in managing physical, functional, and psychosocial problems associated with cancer and its treatment, the book examines approaches aimed at preserving functional independence, supporting participation in activities of daily living, and improving quality of life in light of current scientific research.

Four Distinct Areas of Rehabilitation Explored in the Book

Consisting of four chapters, the book examines rehabilitation practices for different patient populations through contributions prepared by our department's academics.

01 | Orthopedic Oncology Rehabilitation

Lecturer Dr. Hande Besna Göçen

This chapter examines assessment methods, exercise interventions, and rehabilitation approaches for musculoskeletal malignancies, including bone and soft tissue tumors, metastatic bone disease, and multiple myeloma. It addresses functional recovery following surgery, exercise safety, and individualized rehabilitation programs.

02 | Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation Following Breast and Gynecological Cancers

Asst. Prof. Hüsniye Merve Demirer

This chapter examines pelvic floor dysfunctions that may develop following breast and gynecological cancer treatments. It discusses the role of pelvic floor muscle training, biofeedback, manual therapy, and other rehabilitation approaches in symptom management and quality of life.

03 | Rehabilitation in Neuro-Oncology

Res. Asst. İremnur Günhan

This chapter explores rehabilitation approaches for motor, sensory, and cognitive impairments associated with tumors of the central and peripheral nervous systems. It emphasizes the importance of supporting functional independence, exercise-based interventions, and multidisciplinary rehabilitation processes.

04 | Rehabilitation in Pediatric Oncology

Asst. Prof. Suzan Aydın

This chapter examines early rehabilitation, therapeutic exercise, play-based interventions, and technology-assisted rehabilitation approaches in childhood cancers. It highlights the importance of individualized approaches in supporting children's physical capacity, functional independence, and quality of life.
