August 12 International Youth Day: Future Leaders Demand a Voice on the Global Stage

Celebrated annually on August 12, International Youth Day brings the critical role of youth in solving global issues and their power in social transformation to the world's agenda.

Supported by the United Nations (UN), this meaningful day reminds all societies once again of the vital importance of the active participation of the youth population in decision-making processes.
The need for the innovative ideas of young people in achieving sustainable development goals is increasing day by day. From the climate crisis to digitalization, and from unequal opportunities in education to global peacebuilding, young people now stand out not just as the "future," but as the playmakers of "today." The strong bond Generation Z and Alpha have with technology carries the potential to produce practical and rapid solutions to global problems. Directing this potential properly opens the doors to a more livable world for all of humanity.
Worldwide, non-governmental organizations, activists, and policymakers use this day as an opportunity to discuss the main challenges faced by youth. Obstacles such as global unemployment, economic crises, housing issues, and the digital divide draw attention as the biggest problems limiting young people from reaching their full potential. Experts constantly make this call to decision-makers: Young people need to be positioned not merely as a "target audience," but as "solution partners" for a sustainable future.
First declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999, August 12 International Youth Day continues to create international awareness so that young people can make their voices heard and advocate for their rights. Today, constituting a significant portion of the global population, the youth continue to be the engine of global change, demanding a fair, equal, and inclusive world. The fact that investing in youth is directly investing in the world's future is emphasized anew every August 12.
