Students of Child Development Participated in the Symposium “Rethinking Urban Justice” with the “VISIA” Project

Students from the Department of Child Development at the Faculty of Health Sciences of Istanbul Gelisim University participated in the Student Utopia Competition Final Event held within the scope of the symposium “Rethinking Urban Justice: Hope • Utopia • Coexistence Symposium III,” which took place on May 15, 2026, at the Mehmet Akif Ersoy Conference Hall of Istanbul Gelisim University. The students joined the event with their project titled “VISIA: Micro Child Harbors for Invisible Children.” The project was prepared by Hatice Özdemir, Hayrunnisa Ebrar Koşkulu, İrem Aleyna Satılmış, and Sinem Keskin under the supervision of Assistant Professor Havva Sağlam.

At the opening of the event, Naci Görür, Founding Member of the Science Academy, delivered a speech titled “Earthquake-Resilient Cities.” In his speech, Görür emphasized that cities should be planned not only through physical structures but also with a human-centered, sustainable, and inclusive perspective. Highlighting the importance of safe and livable cities, his speech provided an important perspective for the projects discussed throughout the event.

In the “VISIA” project prepared by the Child Development students, attention was drawn to the fact that children often remain invisible in today’s cities. The project proposed transforming unused or abandoned urban spaces into child-friendly environments and designed “micro child harbors” where children can safely play, socialize, express their emotions, and experience learning opportunities.

Supporting different developmental areas through play, emotion, social interaction, nature, and learning harbors, the project focused on sustainability, accessibility, and community-based participation. Prepared from a child development perspective, the project aimed to raise awareness about child-friendly urban design by emphasizing that children are not only the individuals of the future but also active users of cities today.
